Pediatric Eye Examinations
The American Optometric Association recommends that a child have their first eye examination between the ages of six to twelve months. At this exam, we will test for proper visual functioning and ocular development. A pediatric eye examination includes evaluation of eye teaming, focusing abilities, eye tracking, vision capabilities, and overall ocular health. All children need a comprehensive eye evaluation beyond the distance vision check performed at your pediatrican's office. For children, adequate vision, eye teaming, and focusing is essential for good school performance, sports performance and much more.
Optomap Retinal Imaging
We are pleased to offer our patients an improved annual retinal examination with a new non-dilating imaging system called the Optomap. We are one of the select practices in America where this technology is available. The Optomap provides a wide-field digital record of the structures of your retina and optic nerve that become part of your permanent medical record. Optomap imaging is fast, easy, and comfortable. At the time of your examination, we are able to review your retinal images with you to allow you to view the back of your eye.

Eye Injuries and Infections
Our office provides emergency services for eye injuries and infections. Please call our University office at 704.295.0123 or our Ballantyne office at 704.295.4444 during office hours, after hours, or on weekends. State-of-the-art microscopes allow us to examine the front surface of the eye and facial areas around the eye for infection or injury. After assessing the extent of the injury or infection a treatment plan will be formulated and explained to you. Treatment may include medications and supportive care. Follow-up visits to monitor your recovery will be scheduled as needed.
Dry Eyes
Dry eye symptoms include scratchy eyes, burning, redness, grittiness, and even tearing. Certain oral medications, reading, computer tasks and dry environments may aggravate marginally dry eyes. Dry eyes can be diagnosed by using dyes to observe tear patterns, evaluating the amount of tears on the front of the eye and reviewing your symptoms. Treatment may include artificial tears, prescription medications, eye drops for treating allergies, oral nutraceuticals, and/or punctal plugs inserted in the tear drainage canals.
Laser Vision Correction
You may be interested in laser vision correction and would like to find out more about the procedure and whether you are a candidate. First, a brief description of the procedure:
In LASIK, a flap is surgically created in the cornea and gently folded back. An excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea into a flatter shape. The flap is then put back in place, acting like a natural bandage. The healing process is quick and the discomfort level is quite low.
Patients undergoing LASIK normally remark that the procedure was painless, and they could see well the very first day. Most patients have improved vision in 24-48 hours, although that timeframe can vary as each individual heals at a different rate. Vision, although greatly improved immediately after surgery, often continues to improve for some weeks, even months.
While the success rate for LASIK is excellent, it is not for everyone. Every individual's eyes are different so even though you may have had a friend who has had LASIK, it may not be the best course of treatment for you. If you are interested in laser vision correction, we will be happy to guide you in picking the right surgeon, procedure, and laser appropriate for you.
After the procedure, our unsurpassed post-operative care involves monitoring your eyes and adjusting your medications for the best possible results.
Surgery Co-Management
Our office provides pre- and post-operative care for ocular surgical services such as cataract surgery, LASIK and refractive procedures, and other laser treatments for glaucoma or lens implants. We will work with your eye surgeon to ensure preparedness before your procedure and proper management for the optimal outcome after the procedure.
Additionally, we have working arrangements established with other eye specialists to manage eye disorders such as retinal detachments, retinal tears and hemorrhages.
Cataracts, Glaucoma, Diabetes
Cataracts: The natural lens in the eye gradually becomes less clear as we get older. When these opacities develop, the lens becomes hazy and vision is subsequently impaired. Our doctors evaluate your eyes for development of cataracts during every comprehensive eye exam. When the cataract affects the vision to the extent that you cannot read or see distant objects comfortably, we will recommend cataract surgery. Our office co-manages pre- and post-operative care with surgeons who are experts in cataract surgery. Cataract surgery can provide you with a bright new world of vision.
Glaucoma: Glaucoma gradually destroys the optic nerve tissue in the back of the eye. The greatest danger of glaucoma stems from the fact that the disease is painless and without obvious symptoms until significant damage has occurred. Glaucoma is often related to high pressure inside the eyes, but may be associated with several other factors including vascular disease and systemic medications. Our doctors monitor for glaucoma at every comprehensive eye examination by using advanced computerized instrumentation to screen for peripheral vision defects, checking the pressure within your eyes, and analyzing the appearance of your optic nerves. If you are diagnosed with glaucoma, we will formulate a management plan for you. The plan will most likely involve medications that lower the eye pressure. Most forms of glaucoma are successfully treated with eye drops. Laser treatments and eye surgery may become necessary to treat more advanced glaucoma.
Diabetes: Diabetic patients should have a dilated retinal examination each year. Diabetic retinopathy is the most common diabetic eye disease and a leading cause of blindness in American adults. It is caused by changes in the blood vessels of the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. A healthy retina is necessary for good vision. In some people with diabetic retinopathy, blood vessels may swell and leak fluid. In other people, abnormal new blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina. If this condition is discovered in the early stages, laser treatments can be performed to stop or slow the leaking of fluid and/or the growth of the abnormal blood vessels into the retinal tissue, thereby reducing the risk for further vision loss. We have the latest instruments used to detect these types of changes in the back of the eye. If we discover advancing diabetic eye disease that can be treated or needs further evaluation, we will refer you for consultation and further testing to a board certified retinal specialist.
Low Vision Services
Patients that have lost eyesight due to injuries or eye diseases most likely require special devices and products to help them function more independently. We offer a full range of low vision solutions to allow our patients to use their remaining vision. Our doctors and staff are trained to demonstrate the use of these devices, which can range all the way from simple hand magnifiers to closed circuit TV systems.
In addition, we can direct those who have low vision problems to products that will help accomplish the day-to-day tasks that are difficult to perform without help. We are even able to connect patients with the National Library of Congress to receive books on tapes and with the Metrolina Association for the Blind to assist with a wide variety of low vision needs.
